Caterpillar: World Usability Day
For World Usability Day, my college partnered with Caterpillar in order to give students real-world experience in UX design, research, and testing. We were divided into small teams and were tasked with redesigning Caterpillar’s login, sign-up, and asset management pages for the company’s vendors.
First, the team brainstormed and came up with the user goals and business goals.
We had to figure out who our user is. Our user was most likely either a small business owner or some who worked in agriculture that needed this large machinery. The team came up with a persona in order to get the best picture of our users.
After capturing our potential user’s personality, goals, and frustrations, we wanted to capture the journey the user would take when using this asset manager.
Before starting on our mockups, we analyzed the current design of CAT’s asset manager. What was done well and what could be done better? We would implement these ideas in our own designs.
We created mockups for both a mobile version and desktop version of this asset manager. There was quite a bit of data to work with and organize so it presented a challenge. Below are only a few screens.
After completing our mockups, we created a prototype to test with real CAT employees as our users. They gave a lot of very valuable feedback on our design and our process. This entire project was completed in the span of a week.
